Famously called the ‘cloud-kissing monument’ by Mark Twain, the Shaheed Minar stands tall at Esplanade in Central Kolkata. Originally called the ‘Ochterlony Monument’, it was founded in 1848 and was renamed in 1969 in memory of those who lost their lives in the freedom struggle.
It has a picturesque view of the whole of Kolkata but for that, you have to climb up some 200 stairs. The architecture of the minaret has a Turkish and Egyptian blend both. Read full review
