Philomela – a band of Boston based Bengalis whose eclectic mix of music is inspired from their deep rooted memories of the Indian classical, Tagore and folk, rock, jazz, latin, blues and experiences of the miles traveled.
Meet Koushik Chakrabarty, the man who holds the tempo, mans the beat and gives the start to every song. From Tabla to Handsonic, from shakers to backing vocals, he is at the epicenter of every song. Trained in Hindustani classical and Rabindrasangeet, Sharanya Sarkar Verma is Philomela’s voice, a voice that touches your soul. With multiple guitars, pianos, saxophones, violins, folk instruments and smaller wind instruments, Ayon Basumallik continues his quest for tonal variety by infusing quintessential Bengali sentiments with global musical sensibilities. Debadeep Bhattacharyya is a man with a collection of 100 string instruments and he loves exploring the genre between Indian folk and semi-classical with his guitars, folk string instruments and percussions.
Their memories of music and shared sentiments bind the four in the band Philomela – and their music gives them wings. Life ebbed and flowed but Sharanya, Debadeep, Koushik and Ayon kept jamming whenever and wherever.
Philomela is the mythological princess of Athens who survived death by turning into a nightingale. To escape her plight, she took her flight to freedom. In trickles and floods, their songs come in a wide spectrum of music and Philomela’s first album ‘Ami Anya Desh’ was borne with a ballad drenched in morning dew, wistful blues, surf rock tribute, listless yearnings in a bossa nova morphing into a teen taal addha or how music sets us free. Experience the nostalgic journey of friendships, hardships, emotions and freedom at the launch of their debut album.
